Bill ignores Treaty —Hart
PA Wellington The anti-racist organisation, Hart Aotearoa, says the proposed Bill of Rights will “entrench racism in legislation.” It said the draft legislation for the bill “does nothing to satisfy Maori demands that the Crown honours the Treaty of Waitangi”. Hart’s national co-ordi-nator, Ms Sharyn-Jayne Seyborne, said the treaty was the only document jointly signed by representatives of the Crown and most Maori tribes. “It should be the
foundation of our country and should be recognised as the supreme constitutional document.” The draft Bill of Rights sought to “recognise and affirm” the treaty but gave no real power to its provisions, she said. A more substantial proposal was required if the Government was to honour the treaty. She said Hart Aotearoa was making submissions to the select committee dealing with the proposed Bill of Rights, and planned a public education programme on consequences of the bill.
