Art gallery access
Sir,—Like Helen M. Hogan (February 5), I am pleased to see a well-designed ramp being built at the Robert McDougall Art Gallery. George Fenton may be proud of his earlier incompatible addition to the building — careful planting will screen that from public view. But why does he have to bash a hole through Edward Armstrong’s lovely tapestry bricks and Oamaru stone, when the ramp could have terminated at the pedestal on the left of the entrance steps? At some future date a matching ramp could be built on the righthand side, if the general symetrical appearance is to be maintained. That would obviate any passing problems for wheelchairs—Yours, etc., HUGH R. TAYLOR. February 6, 1986.
