PA Dunedin “Miss Christchurch-Can-terbury,” Lynda McManus, was crowned “Miss New Zealand” on Saturday evening. She is aged 19, a blueeyed blonde, and is a fulltime model in Christchurch. She is originally from Westport. "I just can’t believe it. I never thought it would be me,” she said after being crowned. The finalists in the show had to answer the question: “What would you say to the detractors.of beauty contests?”
It was an appropriate question, as the show was interrupted twice by foui women protesters inside the Regent Theatre. They were arrested and charged with disorderly conduct. Earlier in the evening, a man was arrested and charged with depositing dangerous litter after he . threw a bottle from the first floor of the theatre building. Mirage hatchback. The second place-getter was “Miss Counties,” Connie Phillips, aged 19, of Papatoetoe. Third was “Miss Nelson-Marl-borough,” Deborah Cumming. The other semi-finalists were "Miss Auckland,” Joanna Johns; “Miss Wellington,” Sherry Tyler; “Miss Waikato,” Penelope Barr; “Miss Northland,” Natalie Lewis; and Miss Manawatu,” Kerina Hay. The other two finalists - were “Miss Waikato” and “Miss Manawatu.”
