‘Evita’ ends in ovation
NZPA-PA London The eight-year West End run of the musical, “Evita,” ended in London yesterday with a five-min-ute standing ovation and a chorus of “Auld Lang Syne.” The Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber show was performed 2913 times on the stage of the Prince Edward Theatre, in London. The show, which has taken £23 million ($60.95 million) at the box office, will move to Manchester in the spring. Another Tim Rice musical, “Chess,” will be staged at the London theatre in May. After the opening night in June, 1978, which
earned a record eightminute ovation, not one seat at the theatre was empty for any performance, Including matinees, for more than a year. One was almost permanently filled by possibly the show’s greatest fan, Mae Briggs, of Romford, who has seen the musical 330 times.
On her way into the auditorium for yesterday’s performance she said, “I wouldn’t miss this for the world. I reckon I have spent my life savings on the show, but I have become addicted to it” Tickets for the last night were as hard to come by as for the first, when touts charged £lOO ($265) for a seat
