N.Z. yacht third
NZPA staff correspondent Fremantle Wild weather with winds howling up to 25 knots and crashing seas took their toll on boats, sails and crews in the second race of the world 12-metre yachting championships at Fremantle yesterday. As the famous Fremantle Doctor prescribed an overdose of his afternoon cooler, the French flier French Kiss came back from the rack to win the race from Australia 111, with New Zealand’s KZS — the victor on the first day — taking third and maintaining her over-all lead in the championship. Three boats succumbed to the boisterous conditions and went home early, while several more damaged sails and rigging.
The New Zealanders were not exempt, with KZ3 damaging her headsail shortly after getting away well, putting her back in the fleet once again, and KZS twice having serious speed problems that cost her positions and possibly a win as well. But in the end fate dealt
kindly with the Kiwis; the skipper, Chris Dickson, sorted out the problems with KZS, and crossed third to earn enough points to hold on to his lead in the series, with another race to come today. Provisional placings for the second race: French Kiss (France) 1, Australia IH (Australia) 2, New Zealand KZS (New Zealand) 3. Margins: 525, 465, 445. Then came: Australia II (Aust.) 4, Italia (Italy) 5, True North (Canada) 6, America II (United States) 7, South Australia (Aust) 8, New Zealand KZ3 (NZ) 9, Challenge 12 (Aust) 10, Victory ’B3 (Italy) 11, Gretel II (Aust) 12.
Retired: Courageous (US), Azzurra (Italy).
