Rum surprise for police
Rum valued at almost $BOOO, taken during a burglary, was discovered by the police on Saturday when they investigated another break-in.
The police were called to Investigate a burglary at Ballins Rattray’s bond store in Byron Street, Sydenham. It was thought during the initial investigation that nothing had
Deen taken from the store.
Several hours later they went to investigate another burglary at a building next to the bond store. Twenty-four cartons, each containing a dozen bottles of rum, were found at the building. A police spokesman said the cartons had been stacked, ready for collect-
ing. A policeman stayed at the scene of the second break-in and waited for the rum to be collected. Four youths, one aged 16, two 17, and one 18, appeared about two hours later and were arrested. Three will appear in the District Court today charged with burglary. The fourth will face a theft charge. The spokesman said the rum was valued at $7900.
