North Beach emerges as life-saving force
The emergence of North Beach as the leading club in the junior section, and third club on the over-all points table, was the feature of the Canterbury StelnlagerRadio Avon surf life-sav-ing championships at South Brighton Beach during the week-end. Once a powerful club. North Beach has struggled in the competitive arena for a number of years, but a talented crop of juniors, allied with the outstanding senior surf boat and surf canoe crews that the club has had in recent years, should make it a leader in the sport again in a few years.
Taylors Mistake was again the top club. It was easily the best club in the open grade, and its women were second to South Brighton. Paul Tozer (New Brighton) had a highly successful week-end in the open grade. He won both the surf race and the surf belt race, and helped New Brighton to win the surf teams race, well clear of the runner-up. New Brighton’s strength in swimming events was emphasised by the fact that Duncan Doig and Grant Forbes followed Tozer home into the minor places in the individual surf race. Carl Immers (Taylors Mistake), who had to settle for second place in the belt race behind Tozer, won the open surf tube rescue title. Lars Burner (Taylors Mistake) won the premier individual event in the open section, the iron man. He beat Geoff Barry (South Brighton), and Dean Waru (Taylors Mistake), was third. The two clubs who have dominated the open resuce and resuscitation events for a number of years, Taylors Mistake and South Brighton, filled
the main placings in the four and six-man events. South Brighton A won the six-man event by 0.3 of a point from the national titleholder, Taylors Mistake A. Taylors won the four-man event. The South Brighton B team, which finished third in the open six-person event, contained two women, Andrea Morritt and Janice Beaumont. They had a hectic hour yesterday morning. They had to dash from the finish of the open six-man event, to take their places in the South Brighton A women’s team which easily retained its provincial title and the Le Cren Rose Bowl. Simon Davis (Taylors Mistake) enjoyed a successful two days in surfski events. He won the final of the surf-ski race, combined with Richard Boyle to win the surf-ski rescue final and the double surf-ski final, and was a member of the winning Taylors Mistake surf-ski relay team. Peter Cox (Waikuku), as expected, won the malibu board final, and North Beach A won all four races to retain the open surf boat title. Sumner, which has had a lean time in Canterbury championships for a number of years, won two open titles — the senior surf-canoe final, and the surf-canoe rescue final. Lisa Chamberlain (New Brighton) retained her individual surf race title, beating Jane Bishop (South Brighton). Tracey Black (North Beach) finished a commendable third. Chamberlain relinquished her surf belt title. She was only fifth in the final. The race was won by Jo Barry (South Brighton). Bishop again had to settle for the runner-up position, and she filled the same placing in the surf
tube rescue final. The Waimairi B team upset South Brighton’s chances of winning both the women’s rescue and resuscitation finals. Waimairi won the fourplace final. The North Beach junior crews won all but one of the craft events during the week-end, but their most satisfying win was in the taplin relay, which proved what a good group of all-round competitors they have. North Beach was disqualified in the final of the surf canoe rescue after crossing the line first. One of the crew members was not wearing regulation togs. Final points at the carnival were: Over all: Taylors Mistake 132, South Brighton 105, North Beach 90, New Brighton 78, Waimairi 41, Waikuku 38, Sumner 10, Spencer Park 4.
