Aust. Davis Cup squad
NZPA-AAP Sydney The Rod Laver look-a-like, Mark Woodforde, has been named in the six-man Australian Davis Cup squad which takes on New Zealand in Auckland next month. The 20-year-old Woodforde hails from Adelaide and his selection continues his rapid rise up the standings in world tennis. WoodfOrde showed his potential by making the third round of the Australian Open in December followed by a win in the New Zealand Open in Auckland last month. The squad to face New Zealand in the firstround tie from March 7-9 is Pat Cash, John Fitzgerald, Wally Masur, Peter McNamara, Paul McNamee and Woodforde. The team’s captain, Neale Fraser, said yesterday he was happy with the players named. “The squad has a good mix of experience together with young players,” he said. Mr Fraser said he had spoken to Cash, aged 20, who has been off the scene for more than six months with a back inSHe is at present ing at the late Harry Hopman’s tennis ranch in Florida. “I have spoken to Pat in Florida and he is very keen and enthusiastic to be involved,” said Mr Fraser.
