Swiss yachtsman to face charges
PA Wellington The Swiss yachtsman at the centre of a customs and police investigation will face two charges in the District Court at Napier today. The sailor, who identified himself to the “Dominion” newspaper as Phillipe Romaiiler, aged 29, of Yverdon, Switzerland, will be charged under the Customs Act. Police and customs officers began investigations after the lone seaman failed to report to customs in Napier earlier last week. Investigations showed he had already berthed his yacht at Paremata to replenish food supplies and at Wellington where he visited a yacht supply
shop late last month. Interpol was called to help identify the man, who travels on a Swiss passport. Customs inquiries have resulted in two charges being laid against the sailor. Customs’ assistant collector for the Enforcement Division, Mr Jerome O’Malley, said the sailor would be charged with failing to report to customs on arrival in New Zealand and failing to produce an inward report. An inward report required relates to the boat, cargo, goods and people aboard. Although the matter was routine, it was most unusual for these particular charges to be pressed, Mr O’Malley said.
