Australia wins World Series Cup with ease
NZPA-AAP Melbourne Australia scored a morale-boosting win over India yesterday to win the World Series Cup oneday cricket competition.
After a dismal summer of tests, Australia outplayed the world one-day champions in the second final at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Set 188 to win after India had been dismissed for 187 off its 50 overs, the Australian batsmen, led by Allan Border, cruised to a seven-wicket victory off 47.2 overs. The win, before a crowd of 72,192 — a record for an AustraliaIndia game in Australia — wrapped up the best-of-three final series 2-0, after Australia’s triumph in Sydney on Wednesday. The Australian all-roun-der, Greg Matthews, was named player of the finals, winning sAust2ooo ($2680) and a set of gold goblets. Border took charge ot his team’s fortunes after the openers, David Boon (44) and Dirk Wellham (43), had both scored well to lay a solid foundation. The Australian captain’s 65 came off just 67 deliveries and included five fours. The batsmen’s task had been made much easier
by the Australian bowling attack which once again, proved its ability to both restrict the run flow and take wickets. Of the bowlers, both Matthews, who took two for 37, and Bruce Reid, with exactly the same figures, excelled. Simon Davis also continued his wonderful debut series with an economical one for 23 off his 10 overs. When the Indians came to bowl the burden was shouldered by Kapil Dev, with two for 26 off nine overs, who was the only real threat to Australia’s chances. Border had the ultimate moment of triumph when he stroked the winning single to Kapil at mid-off and ran down the pitch with his arms raised in the air. The Australians completed a lap of honour to a standing ovation after receiving the trophy and the winner’s cheque of sAust32,ooo ($42,880). INDIA S. Gavaskar c Border b Davis 11
