Michele Bromac fancied in fillies’ race

From JEFF SCOTT Blenheim Michele Bromac, favoured with the ace draw, should prove too good in the second South Island heat of the D.B. Export Fillies series on the second day of the Marlborough Trotting Club’s meeting today. The Besta Fella filly was in trouble, breaking on the home turn at Addington Raceway on Friday after sprinting up from the back in a sub-2min mile, but should be able to capitalise on a good run- handy to the pace from the draw today.

The half-sister to Aurum Bay (seven wins) showed her class two starts back at Addington on January 22 with a decisive win over Koobecar, Laudit, a rival today, and Ollie’s Chance

(second in the D.B. heat on Friday) in a 2min 3.3 s rate for the mobile 2000 m. Ricky May, Laudit’s regular reinsman, felt the talented daughter of Lordship and In or Out did well to get as close as fourth at Addington on Friday, albeit eight and three-quarter lengths from the winner. “She had a problem and paced very roughly, but it should be ironed out today,” he said. She has yet to finish further back than fifth in five starts — she has won twice — and should figure in the finish again today. The Cambridge visitor, Western Fella, comes into the outside of the frontline and will need some luck in the running. The Smooth Fella— Del’s Dream filly equalled

the season’s best for a three-year-old filly over 2200 m of 2min 49s (2min 3.6 s mile rate) at the Matamata meeting before coming south, ran on late for fifth at Addington on Friday and should be respected. French Heritage, out of luck on Friday, is drawn to get some of it, while Free’s Best should be best of the others in the $12,750 heat, the first leg of the T.A.B. double and the trifecta event. Steven John should be firm fancy to extend his winning sequence to six in the El Patron Handicap over 3200 m, the second leg of the T.A.B. double. The Armbro Del gelding has won the Amberley and Nelson cups in recent weeks and again should be well suited by the extreme distance today.

World of Fame continued his consistent run of form with a game run over the 2300 m of the Marlborough Cup on the first day after improving wide in midfield over the last 1300 m. He failed by only a neck to pull back Aran Blaze and will be out to avenge his defeat by Steven John in the Amberley Cup over this distance last month.

Radiant King went an improved race on Saturday, being three wide in the open from the 2000 m to the 800 m then being held up for a time in the straight. He was useful fifth and further quick improvement could be expected today.
