Record price for yearling
PA Hamilton The Australian millionaire, Mr Jack Honan, outbid a syndicate of prominent New Zealand trotting personalities in Hamilton yesterday to set a new record price for a standardbred yearling sold at auction Australia or New Zealand. Mr Honan went to $120,000 to secure the colt, McCoy, by Smooth Fella from the cup-class mare, Black Watch, offered by Mr R. A. Yardley, of Ohaupo.
Mr Honan had also been responsible for the previous record, paying $Bl,OOO for a Smooth Fella—Sakuntala colt at
the National Sale in Christchurch last year. Earlier yesterday Messengers Farms, of Christchurch, had broken the Great Northern sale record when it bid $26,000 for Curtin Fanns' Lordship—Honest Me filly. The previous highest was $20,000, paid in 1984. From a catalogue of 178 lots, there were 107 sales for an aggregate of $587,750, an average of $5492. Both were records, passing previous totals of $352,650 and $3457 respectively. The highest passing was $lO,OOO for a brother to the former fine pacer John Tudor. The reserve was $30,000.
