Hera drives to speedway victory

A Christchurch driver, Terry Hem, emerged the victor after three heats of the Ford Auto Spares Canterbury Stock Car Championship, held at Woodford Glen Speedway on Saturday evening.

Heat one saw Ken O’Connor, on pole position, take the lead from Wayne Parsons and Brian Johnson, followed closely by Bruce Annan, Terry Hern and Gerald Griffiths.

Parson drifted wide allowing Annan through, but he struck engine touble to drop back through the field, while Griffiths worked his way up to second.

Griffiths chased O’Connor, but O’Connor held on to take the heat, with Johnson and Hern third and fourth.

The Nelson driver, Sam Woodford, led out heat two, but spun, allowing John Hillyer and Alan Parkhill through, followed closely by Griffiths.

Griffiths moved through to second, while O’Connor caught Parkhill, with both hitting the concrete wall, to let Hern, and Johnson get

by. Griffiths caught Hillyer, spinning him off the track, to take the heat win and a one point lead over Hern, with a further point back to John-

son. The third and deciding heat saw Griffiths and Hera starting mid-field, while Colin Lambert led out

Lambert hit the fence, with Hera and Griffiths coming through to the front but Lambert caught Griffiths, spinning him out, allowing O’Connor and Johnson through. Hera punctured in the last lap, letting O’Connor win the heat to give him enough points to tie with third placed Johnson for over-all second placing in the championship. Final points: Hern 56, O’Connor, Johnson 54, Griffiths 53.

Blanchard stormed away in the saloon feature to head home Bryan. McSaveney's Viva and the Mini of Terry Waters.

Doug Smith, driving the Ford V 8 powered Sportsman of J. Berryman, was awarded a win in the second Sportsman race, after the leader, Joe Anna, was black-flagged when the wing on his car roof broke loose.

James Berryman powered his Rover V 8 to win all three A grade saloon races, chased all the way by the Escorts of Tony Blanchard and Wayne Mitchell and the Victors of
