Clubs offer boats
PA Wellington The Hutt Valley rowing club has been swamped with offers of replacement boats after a fire destroyed more than $50,000 of racing and training craft. The club treasurer, Mr Colin Sheilds, said offers had been received from other clubs to lend boats. He said there should be no trouble getting one for the club’s coxed four so they could compete in the intermediate and junior
events in the national championships in three weeks.
The fire destroyed about 16 rowing shells, including a German Empacher IV, valued about $10,500. All boats belonged to the club.
The clubrooms at the western end of the Petone foreshore were levelled on Wednesday evening by the blaze which the police are treating as arson. No arrests have been made.
