Rating plan opposed

The North Canterbury Catchment Board has decided to oppose a Christchurch City Council plan •to introduce differential rating on rates it collects for the board.

Opposition to the proposal would be submitted to the City Council by the board soon, said the chief executive officer, Mr E. R. Wood. “The board has two kinds of rates — a uniform rate and a works

rate that reflects benefits to specific areas from particular board projects,” he said. “We work out these different rates for each area each year and ask the City Council to collect them on that basis.

“If they were then to apply some differential of their own, the system of paying according to the benefits received would be lost.”
