Riccarton in strong position

Upper Riccarton and Woolston WMC are in strong positions while Vistalite Sumner and Christchurch WMC are well placed after the first day of the ninth round in the Senior Suburban Cricket Competition on Saturday.

At Heathcote, Upper Riccarton was sent into bat and used the maximum 55 overs to score 196 losing seven wickets.

Nicky Dierck batted well to score 47 while Andrew Kennedy, a Suburban under-23 representative, had more than his share of luck in reaching 84. Darryl Moody was the best of the Heathcote bowlers gaining five wickets. In reply Heathcote's wickets fell quickly from the start, the side being dismissed for 60 runs. Dierck, with one of his best bowling efforts spearheaded the attack, with six wickets to his credit

Heathcote then began its second innings and at stumps had lost an early wicket with only five runs on the board.

Close by at St Leonard’s Square, Vistalite Sumner elected to bat winning the toss.

It compiled 249 and declared after 52 overs with six batsmen scoring over 20 runs each.

Southern Districts got off to a flying start with a 66-run opening partnership before two quick wickets fell. Sumner bowled a brisk 42 overs in two hours to see Districts at stumps six down for 171.

On the other side of town, Bowleys Hornby and Woolston WMC met, with Woolston being asked to bat. At eight down for 206 at afternoon tea, Woolston declared with Bruce Harris topscoring on 51. Ken Taylor was undefeated on 47 and the youthful Murray Sands scored 29 Including six boundaries. Fourteen overs remain in

Hornby’s first innings and it trails by 104 runs with only three wickets in hand. Bottom order Christchurch WMC played fourth place Hoon Hay at Bradford Park. On an excellent batting wicket, Christchurch batted first and declared after 50 overs at 214 for eight, one of its best scores this season. Hard hitting Rod Withers, had the highest individual score for Christchurch with 46. Murray Emerson for Hoon Hay impressed with 54 and was the main contributor to Hoon Hay’s total of 103 from 35 overs. Ron Provan, for Christchurch, bowled 18 overs continuously to snatch four wickets. The senior representative team challenged North Canterbury at Hoon Hay Park for the Minors Association Cup and consequently senior teams can return replacement players to their teams next week. There were four centuries scored and three hat-tricks taken in lower-grade games. The two most impressive performances of the day came from Kevin Calder of the POSB fourth B team playing New Brighton. Calder retired on 136 and then, when bowling, took five wickets for 10 runs including a hat-trick. Fred Dawson, of Bumside WU, playing Aranui in the third C grade, also took five wickets at the cost of 19 runs and, when batting, was undefeated, scoring 120 not out.
