Auck. cuts through

PA Auckland The shame of it all was that Otago had already won the Shell Trophy when Auckland dispatched Northern Districts with some compelling cricket at Eden Park. Auckland, needing Otago to lose on the first innings while completing an outright win over Northern, certainly held their end of the bargain. The opener, Phil Horne, cut a swathe through the Northern bowlers. He and Trevor Franklin put on a 197-run stand as Auckland looked for quick runs. Horne, who resumed at

51 not out overnight, scored his maiden firstclass century before he was bowled trying to force away a Steve Scott delivery for more runs. Franklin looked to be on the way to his second century of the year when he clipped a Scott delivery to square leg to be well caught by the reliable Chris Kuggeleijn. The rest of the Auckland batsmen blazed away in giddy fashion looking for runs and, when Auckland declared at lunch, Northern needed 343 in just about even time to win.

They never looked like making it. They began slowly in the face of some searching aim-at-the-stumps bowling from Auckland and particularly from Stu Gillespie and Martin Snedden.
