Prison officers to wait
PA Wellington Prison officers in Wellington and Auckland have been persuaded to call off industrial action until February 20.
Officers at Mount Crawford Prison w’ere refusing admittance to new inmates on Friday, and officers at Paremoremo imposed a work-to-rule. The Public Service
Association’s prison officers’ group chairman, Mr Shane Goodger, said the officers agreed yesterday to lift their action, and wait until the group’s 14 days notice of industrial action expired on February 20. Officers were upset about the State Service Commission’s pay offer of 20.1 per cent, which was the basic increase
awarded to all public servants, Mr Goodger said.
“We believe we are entitled to more. We have not had a salary claim for seven years. But we have called all action off for the moment because it is illegal.” Mr Goodger said the officers had given an undertaking to hold off industrial action until February 20.
