Shipping news Market share increased

Lyttelton was the only main export port to increase its market share in the barley trade last year. In a report to the Lyttelton Harbour Board’s trade and commercial development committee, the marketing manager, Mr Peter Morgan, said the port had increased its share in the barley trade 13 per cent. A total of 107,575 tonnes of barley were handled in Lyttelton last year, compared with 39,843 in 1984. Last year’s total, 107,575 tonnes was handled in Lyttelton. This represented 28 per cent of the total barley trade. In 1984, Lyttelton handled 15 per cent of the market share with a total of 39,843 tonnes. Most of the barley trade goes through the Port of Timaru. Last year Timaru handled 48.5 per cent of the total trade (186,606 tonnes), compared with 60 per cent (159,404 tonnes) in 1984. Bluff handled 23 per cent of the market trade, and Picton 0.5 per cent. Mr Morgan said the wheat market had shown a sharp contrast to the barley market over the last year. “At present only Timaru and Bluff export wheat, although it is expected that some exports will go through the bulk facility at Lyttelton in the coming season,” the report said. Timaru had exported only 830 tonnes of wheat last year, compared with 508 tonnes in the previous year. Bluff had

not handled any wheat, compared with 81,321 tonnes in 1984. APPIVAT Iver Swan (7 a.m.), 14,386, San Francisco (U.M.S.). DEPARTURE Spirit of Competition (6 p.m.), 1600, Wellington (Pacifica).
