This picture of a girl taken shortly before she died in a water-filled pit after the Colombian volcano disaster was chosen yesterday as “Picture of the Year” In the world press photo contest The picture, “The Agony of Omaira Sanchez,” was taken by a French photographer, Frank Fournier, of the
New York agency, Contact Press Images. It was one of 5418 entries. It was one ©f several photos that won Fournier first prize in the Spot News section of the contest The photos were
taken in Armero, the Colombian town burled in a massive mudslide caused by the eruption of the Nevado del Ruiz Volcano la November. The Colombian Gov-
eminent said more than 20,000 people died in the disaster. It was the twenty-ninth consecutive year that the prize was awarded by the Dutch-based World
Press Photo Foundation, an independent organisation financially supported by the city of Amsterdam and several Dutch companies and international news organisations.
