Sale to Ford off, G.M. talks continue
NZPA-Reuter London The British Government gave in yesterday to rebels in the Conservative Party and abandoned plans to sell off Britain’s last main car-maker to Ford of the United States. An announcement that the Government no longer planned to sell the AustinRover division of Staterun British Leyland was issued less than 24 hours after it confirmed that exploratory talks had be-
gun with Ford. A senior Government source said the decision had been taken by the Cabinet to avoid more political damage to the Government after the crisis triggered by a Cabinet dispute over rival European and American bids for a stake in the Westland helicopter company. But despite the abrupt Government reversal over
the sale to Ford, the Trade Secretary, Mr Paul Channon, said plans to sell B.L.’s truck and LandRover division to General Motors were well-ad-vanced and would go ahead. The B.L. sell-off plans provoked a rebellion among Conservative Parliamentarians on Thursday. Up to 40 opposed the Government in an emergency debate.
