More vessels use port
An increased number of trading vessels have visited Lyttelton during the last four months, according to the Harbourmaster’s report at the Lyttelton Harbour Board’s trade and commercial development committee’s monthly meeting. Captain Jack Barbour said 238 trading vessels had entered the port in the four months ended January 27. This was 20 more than in the corresponding period in the previous year. The registered tonnage of the vessels totalled 2,008,208 tonnes, compared with 2,048,246 tonnes in the previous year. •
The biggest .increase was in the number of overseas ships—llo this year compared with 99. Twenty-eight vessels from Pacific registered a total of 147,494 tonnes, and 100 coastal vessels registering 366,818 tonnes. Captain Barbour reported that 34 fishing vessels had used the port for food, stores, and medical attention in the fourmonth period. Of these, 18 were Russian, 13 Japanese, and three were Korean.
