Pair get jail for ‘senseless crimes’
PA Wellington Jail sentences of nine months were imposed on two young Wanganui men for “senseless” crimes of violence on the street on New Year’s Day. In the High Court at Wellington, Mr Justice Jeffries sentenced Richard Paul Gray, aged 22, unemployed, and Gavin Dwane Borthwick, aged 18, concrete worker, to nine months imprisonment each for aggravated robberies on New Year’s Day. Gray pleaded guilty to aggravated robbery of a
man of 50c, and being found unlawfully in an enclosed yard. Borthwick admitted aggravated robbery of a man of $2O, robbery of a man of a leather jacket, and attempted conversion of a car. His Honour said that although no-one was injured, • the robberies, in which Gray and Borthwick had a knife, were crimes of violence on the street, random incidents which were to an extent senseless. He convicted and discharged the men on the remaining charges.
