Father ‘overwhelmed’
NZPA-AAP Sydney Lindy Chamberlain’s father said he was overwhelmed that his daughter was released from Darwin’s Berrimah Jail yesterday. Reporters broke the news to Mr Cliff Murchison at his home at Nowra, on the New South Wales south coast.
He was close to tears
when told what the family had been waiting 5y 2 years to hear. “How wonderful ... I just say, praise God,” Mr Murchison said. “We have been waiting ■for so long ... it’s almost a shock.” Mr Murchison said he and his wife would probably travel to the Chamberlains’ home at Coorangbong, the Seventh
Day Adventist community near Newcastle, as soon as possible. He had hot yet made contact with Lindy Chamberlain’s husband, Michael. “It is just so wonderful ...my wife’s brother is out from America and we were planning to visit Coorangbong this Weekend,” he said. Michael Chamberlain said last night he was stunned by the release of his wife. Mr Chamberlain, aged 41, speaking through a friend, told A.A.P. he would spend some time with his wife and three children before facing the public spotlight. Mr Murchison said the discovery of the baby’s jacket, and Lindy’s release, emphasised that she told the truth about her daughter Azaria’s death in 1980. He said the authorities would have a lot to answer for over her conviction for Azaria’s murder.
