GILMOUR SOUTHLAND MEDICAL TRUST FELLOW IN MEDICINE THE SOUTHLAND HOSPITAL BOARD, Invercargill, New Zealand, in conjunction with the University of Otago, invites applications for the post of R. J. Gilmour Southland Medical Trust Fellow in Medicine. The R. J. Gilmour Trust was established recently and has, as its basic alm, the fostering of relations between the Otago Medical School and Southland Hospital, Kew, Invercargill. Because one of the donors is a past President of the Australasian College of Physicians, it has been decided that the first Fellow should be in Medicine. It is anticipated that this exciting new Fellowship will attract academically bright young Physicians. Applicants should be registered or registerable as a Specialist with the N.Z. Medical Council. The appointee will work within the Department of Medicine in the particular discipline of the applicant’s training. Based at Southland Hospital, Kew, Invercargill, he/she will have allocated beds and be responsible to the Medical Superintendent for patient medical care. He/she may, under the direction of the Superlntendent-in-Chief, be required to make visits to other hospitals under the control of the Southland Hospital Board. The appointee will be the Chief Liaison Officer for the University of Otago Medical School in Southland and will be responsible for the over-all management and supervision of medical students at Southland Hospital, Kew, Invercargill. The appointee will also be involved in the organisation of medical teaching and play an important part in this teaching. He/she will have the status of a Clinical Lecturer at the Otago Medical School. The appointee will also be expected to Initiate and conduct research for which funds are available from the Southland Medical Trust. A Fellowship will be awarded on a full time basis three yearly, each time to a different Department at Southland Hospital, Kew, Invercargill. After the initial three years, the Fellow will be eligible for a staff appointment. The successful applicant will be selected by a panel comprising representatives from the University of Otago Medical School and Southland Hospital Board. The department consists of a gymnasium, 4 cubicles, treatment preparation area, cast and splint room, storeroom and office. Treatment plinths, traction table, all electrotherapy and exercise equipment are already installed. Physiotherapy services are to be commenced as the hospital develops. The first priority is for an outpatient service to serve the large local population, and to take referrals from casualty which will accept trauma patients in the new year. Obstetric services will also be required, commencing with prenatal classes, and in 1986 serving the post-natal needs of inpatients. Referrals will also come from the Psychiatric Ward which is currently functional. The department will ultimately serve the surgical, medical and paediatric wards of the hospital and have a community domiciliary outreach role. It is expected that the physiotherapy staff will number four, one of whom has commenced duties as part of the Child and Family Unit multi-disciplinary team. Initially the successful applicant would work as part of a community orientated child and family services team based at the hospital, but duties would expand to include general paediatrics as the hospital develops. Involvement in continuing education would be encouraged. The Shellharbour Hospital is a modern new health facility currently in the commissioning stage.
