Speedy Cheval sets N.Z. record

Speedy Cheval broke the national record, set 13 months ago by his halfbrother, Trenet, when he recorded 2.33 for the mobile 2000 m in the Martineau Brandy Pace. The previous record was 2:33.2. Speedy Cheval followed Coma Berenices, one off the fence, while Bionic Chance tore along in front. Speedy Cheval finished too well for the fillies and won by a length from Bionic Chance with a break to Coma Berenices, which was far from disgraced after being in the open through. Waihemo Jean, an early breaker, did well to finish fourth. Raced in partnership by his Rangiora trainer, Maurice Vermeulen and his wife, Margaret, Speedy Cheval is a gelding by Noodlum from a talented mare in Regal Cheval. He was driven by Colin de Filippi.
