Saucy Star too good

Saucy Star, in the open for much of the race, proved too strong for her rivals in the Firestone Eurosteel Pace at Addington Raceway last evening.

The firm favourite, Smarty Pants, looked likely to test Saucy Star over the final 200 m, but the Rangiora-trained mare held her out quite comfortably by a length and a quarter.

Dreamy Guy, which was shuffled back to last at the 1400 m, improved from the 1000 m and with Sea King led for home. He battled on gamely for third, ahead of Sea King, which did well after breaking and losing a big stretch of ground. Fredericton was almost in line next, with the others well beaten.

The Edendale colt, Captain Cavalla, made amends for some disappointing recent racing when, aided by a lucky run along the rails in the straight, he got up to shade Kotare Sterling in the Autogas Pace. Kotare Stirling’s run was full of merit as he was in the open throughout and three wide from

the 600 m. He was half a neck from the winner, with the same margin to the hot favourite, Keystone Surprise. Then there was a short gap to Laser Lad, which led for the last 1300 m and tired over the last 50m. Borderline was a fair fifth. Newfield Prince broke 200 m out when starting to improve.
