Marlon to oblige at Wairoa

Special correspondent Palmerston North The Woodville trainer, Bruce Marsh, seems to

save his team for the country circuits and as Wairoa has been good to him in the past it is possible that he will produce another Cup winner in Marlon at the Wairoa Racing Club’s meeting today.

Marsh has won the Cup in recent years with Shamrock and Bess and judging by Marlon’s fine win on the first day it is likely that the six-year-old will prove the one to beat today.

The trainer also has Hassendean engaged but it is likely that the chestnut will seek his fifteenth win in the Wairoa Star Handicap, the second leg of the double. While there was considerable merit in Marlon’s first-day win, he could find the second-day winner, Bullet Proof, a tough type which shows plenty of courage and sticks well. It is also certain that II Vento will be all' the better for his firstday run and that the Taupo Cup winner, Grand

Junction, mmust find a share of support also.

Bullet Proof did not beat much when winning on Monday but it was his third straight win, following highweight successes at Hastings and Trentham. Run for Cover is likely to play a leading role, especially as he drops considerably in the handicap and will have tne leading apprentice, Peter Ayres, as his rider. Hassendean has been dominant on the provincial circuits, where practically all his wins have been achieved and another factor is the full 4.5 kg apprentice allowance which is usually claimed for him. As a consequence he will be hard to beat again in the Wairoa Star Handicap should his trainer opt out of the Cup. Almagelee is a useful young sprinter which pressed Pell Mell close on the first day and Reutemann is another which ran well enough on Monday to warrant attention.
