German contract for Waitaki
Waitaki N.Z. Refrigerating, Ltd, has gained a promising export lamb contract with a big West German supermarket group, Tengelmann. Two representatives of Tengelmann have visited New Zealand and signed a one-year contract for supply of lamb carcases and cuts, which was described as “a big interest” for both parties. No figure was put bn the deal. Although the contract will be reviewed in a year, Mr Wolfgang Stein said Tengelmann’s normal policy was to maintairi business links for long periods.
Direct contact with Waitaki was sought following the Anuga Trade Fair in Cologne last October and facilitated by a German smallgoods manufacturer, H. Noelke
and Company. Waitaki and Noelke form a joint partnership in Nelsonbased Pacific Foods, at present finding strong market support in SouthEast Asia with its Zealambi range. Tengelmann is among the world’s biggest chain stores, with more than 3000 outlets in West Germany, Austria and the Netherlands employing 35,000 people. The German turnover alone for last year was 10.7 billion German marks or around SNZBB. The North American Atlantic-Pacific Tea Company, which is 52 per cent owned by Tengelmann, turned over 5U55.98.
The company is proud of its social conscience regarding consumer goods and refuses to sell items such as turtle soup.
