Meat trade steady

PA Wellington Meat trading in Britain this week was reported to be steady, according to the New Zealand Meat Producers’ Board. Domestic beef prices remained unchanged and English lambs advanced by up to 3p a lb, dependent on weight and quality. Domestic pork was in steady demand, with the lower end of the price range improving by 4p a lb. New Zealand lambs sold well again this week, reflecting improved consumer interest at supermarket level, where there has been considerable promotion recently. The trend for private butchers to continue to switch to new season’s New Zealand lamb is expected to continue, especially considering the un-

certain pricing ana availability of local product. On the Smithfield market, new season New Zealand PL grade lambs were quoted at 64p to 66p a lb (JNZ3.6B to JNZ3.BO a kg), and old season PL grade lambs were quoted at 59p to 60p a lb (JNZ3.39 to JNZ3.45 a kg). There was a stand-off between sellers and buyers in the U.S. imported manufacturing beef trade this week. American buyers have been - hesitant to purchase imported beef because of high prices asked by New Zealand exporters and declining domestic beef prices. The average price for New Zealand bull beef dropped by 2c to US95c a ,1b c.i.f. (JNZ3.9B a kg), and cow beef fell by 1c to US92c a lb c.i.f. (JNZ3.BS a kg).
