Youth unemployment

Sir,-r-I sympathise with Kerry McLoughlin (February 3), the 18 year old who cannot get a job. But his problem could be cured overnight, or at least youth unemployment brought down to its average level for all age groups. In a free economy every product has a price on which supply and demand are equal. But when the price goes up or down to an artificial level there will be a shortage or a surplus, as we have often seen with temporary gluts

of fruit or wine, or scarcities or land or petrol when sold at fixed prices. Clearly someone has pushed young people’s wages up to a level where competition makes employers engage experienced people who can work without close supervision. At lower wages it would again pay to take on trainees. But this selfevident truth does not please many of us, so too many of our young people remain idle.— Yours, etc., J. M. TOCKER. February 5, 1986.
