Sparkling first innings
NZPA-Reuter Kandy, Sri Lanka Aravinda de Silva hit a sparkling 81 yesterday as Sri Lanka ran up an impressive five for 235 on the first day of their third four-day cricket match against England B. De Silva, batting at No. 3, struck 15 fours and a six, and shared a third-wicket stand of 108 with Asanaka Gurusinghe <"67) before he was lbw to
left-arm spinner Nick Cook. England B’s 45-year-old assistant manager, Norman Gifford, who was pressed into service because of the damp, grassless pitch, claimed both openers and finished with two for 66 off 27 overs. The England manager, Mr Peter Lush was highly critical of the pitch, and said the decision to select Gifford in preference to the fast
bowlers, Norman Cowans and David Lawrence, had been, made only because the circumstances were “absolutely exceptional”. “This is not the type of wicket we had hoped for in an unofficial test, and it will certainly not give the Sri Lankans the practice they will need when they tour overseas,” Mr Lush said. The first two games in the five-match series ended in draws.
