‘Winter’ scours outbreak

An outbreak of "winter scours” has left 30 weaned lambs dead on a central Canterbury farm. The relatively new disease has also been reported in other areas of the country, said a senior veterinarian at the Lincoln Animal Health Laboratory, Mr Bob Gumbrell.

The Canterbury outbreak was in a flock of 950 weaned lambs. Fanners in the area have been advised to contact their veterinarian immediately if they suspect an outbreak.

The dominant clinical signs are depression, weight-loss, enlargement

of the kidneys, and gastroenteritis.

Similar symptoms have been found from post mortems of affected animals in other centres but there is still little known about the causes of the disease, he said. Mr Gumbrell said Campylobacter jejuni organisms have been isolated in most cases but its role in winter scours is still unknown.

The first cases occurred about five years ago in the Waipukurau area during the winter. The disease has since been found to occur at any time of the year and will affect sheep of all ages.
