AUSTRALIA Golds, resources, and industrials rise

Australian' sharemarkets closed firmer yesterday, bullish sentiment in industrial stocks flowing into the resources and gold sector. At the close of trading, the all-ordinaries index had risen 6.1 points to 1066.8; the all-industrials index had gained 9.2 points to 1618.3; and the all-resources index had improved 3.7 points to 643.8. The gold index had risen 14.5 points to 938.7.

Turnover was 49.8 M shares worth sAustB3.2M, rises outnumbering falls, 231 to 220.

Brokers said a firming of world oil and gold prices overnight had improved market sentiment after the falls. BHP traded in a narrow range and closed 2c up at 720 on a turnover of 1.3 M, while Bell Resources remained steady on 490 c and CSR improved 2c to 345.

Mining stocks traded firmer after heavy falls recently. CRA gained 10c to 560, MIM 8c to 288, Elders Resources 9c to 111 and Western Mining 2c to 340. Gold-related stocks traded mixed but with a firmer bias. Whim Creek and Sons of Gwalia both added 10c to 240 and 350 respectively, while Emperor lost 10c to 335 and Kidston 2c to 596. Oil and gas stocks were weaker over all, the major exception being Santos, which gained 6c to 504. Magellan shed 5c to 195, Bridge OH 3c to 200, and Peko Oil the same to 62.

News Corporation continued its strong run on the industrial board, jumping 75c to 1250 and reaching a high of 1275. Pioneer traded heavily but remained steady on 270.

Elsewhere, Adelaide Steamship gained 15c to 1205, Pacific Dunlop 10c to 280, lEL 8c to 748 and Elders-IXL 5c to 350. However, FAI lost 14c to 682, Lend Lease 4c to 676 while new listing, Montoro Resources, dropped 13c to 27.

Major banking stocks traded firmer with the ANZ up 5c to 460, the National Australia bank 3c to 478 and Westpac 2c to 452.

In share-price-index-fu-tures, active March opened four points higher at 1075.0 and traded upwards to close at 1082.0.
