Classic racer
A Christchurch classic racing car enthusiast, Bill Clark, fires up the engine of his immaculate 1934 P 3 Alfa Romeo grand prix racer in preparation for the Wings and Wheels Classic at Wigram on Sunday. The car, owned by Mr Clark since 1960, has an impressive history. Tazio Nuvolari, one of the great drivers of his era, drove it to a memorable victory in the 1935' Ger-, man Grand Prix. In New Zealand, the
car has had a close association with racing on the fast airfield circuit at Wigram. With the late Les Moore at the wheel, the car won the Lady Wigram Trophy in 1951 and again in 1952. Another accomplished New Zealand driver, Ron, Rdycroft,* then took the car, and drove it to a third win , in the Lady
Wigram Trophy race in 1953. . The venerable Alfa Romeo is to this day the only car to have won the Lady Wigram Trophy three times in succession. Even by modern standards, its. straight-eight engine' packs considerable power. The 2.9 litre, supercharged, twin over-
head-camshaft engine was capable of thrusting the car up to speeds of 266 km/h when it was new. These days, Mr Clark is respectful of the car’s age and it will not be called on for maximum effort on Sunday. But he will show enough of the car’s performance to satisfy the hostalgic desires, of the thousands of tators expected at Wigram. i Photographrby JANE HEALEY
