Tree blocks road

Waitangi Day celebrations at Okains Bay almost did not start yesterday. Early in the morning somebody chopped down a big pine tree on the road to Okains Bay. The tree blocked the road and damaged telephone lines, cutting communications with the bay. Statements saying that all Waitangi Day celebra-

tions at the bay had been cancelled , were telephoned to local radio stations. The tree was cleared from the road and Post Office staff repaired the telephone lines, enabling organisers to correct the radio news bulletins. Later in the morning a “road closed” sign was put across the road. It was removed by the police.
