Central gains upper hand
PA Napier Central Districts had the better of the first day of a Shell Trophy cricket clash with Wellington on Napier’s Nelson Park yesterday. Central’s captain, Richard Hayward, won the toss and his decision to ask Wellington to bat paid dividends with the capital city side all out for 179 in less then two sessions. At stumps Central Districts were 54 for two. Brilliant catches to remove the top scoring batsmen, Ross Ormiston and Ervin McSweeney, were key actions in restricting the Wellington innings to under 200.
The wicket-keeper, lan Smith, puiled off the first to send Ormiston on his way and have Wellington in trouble at 125 for six. Several minutes later Wayne Martin snatched one low and to his left to dismiss McSweeney. On both occasions Derek Stirling was the bowler to benefit, and with McSweeney and Paul Allott’s wickets in successive balls he had claimed three for nine from 11 balls to have the Wellington innings in tatters at 140 for eight. Stirling was the most successful of a well used four-pronged pace attack with four for 46 from 17
overs while Gary Robertson removed the last two batsmen to finish with three for 39 off 18 overs. Ormiston, who scored 34 in 91 minutes off 78 balls, provided the backbone of the Wellington innings.
