Davison, 5 wins, left his stamp on Riccarton racing

By

J. J. BOYLE

The Riccarton jockey, Grant Davison, went close to landing six

winners at the Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting yesterday. After bringing his tally

to five with Noble Note in the Jim Beam Handicap, second leg of the T.A.B. double, he had

hopes of a career best “bag” of six with Zara’s Star in the final event, the Tanqueray Handicap, but the combination had to bow out by a half neck to Aegean Princess. Davison twice rode five winners on one programme, each time at Greymouth meetings earlier in the season.

“I did not get excited about riding five in a day at Greymouth, but I feel differently about five wins on a programme at Riccarton,” Davison said yesterday.

Davison’s other winners yesterday were Blovinski in the Steinlager Handicap, first leg of the T.A.B. double, and the lesser lights, Corrie Doone, Morrie Man, and The Thief. The Noble Note- Davison combination was not under any great threat on the way to winning against the sprinters yesterday. Noble Note had top weight of 58kg, but ran right up to his good placed form from Trentham in winning by a length from Dig In. Satiny’s Pride made it a trifecta for the tribe of Noble Bijou by getting up for third close behind Dig In.

Noble Note is now winner of 17 races from the Riccarton stable of John Bourne and rich autumn races beckon for connections of the six-year-old. All going well he will be back at Trentham next month for the 2ZB Golden Mile and the weight-for-age Lion Brown 1600.

Dig In’s second yesterday was an encouraging first appearance from the Riccarton stable of Myles Johnson.

He was one of the slowest away, but in this, his first start since August, he gamely sustained a run to shade Satiny’s Pride and Tirana in a battle for the minors.
