Two mares dominate feature race at Addington

By

G. K. YULE

Two capable mares in Saucy Star and Smarty Pants could be more than a match for their male four-year-old rivals in the Firestone Eurosteel Pace, the first leg of the T.A.B. double at the Canterbury Park Trotting Club’s meeting at Addington Raceway today. They share the back mark of 20m as a result of their C 6 assessments, the closest to them on the table is El Victory, a C 4 horse, which is on 10m along with four C 3 horses. Saucy Star the winner of six races and $35,595, finished third to Master Mood on the middle night of the recent Forbury

Park meeting. Last Saturday she set much of the pace, but wilted to seventh at the end of a fast-run 2700 m. Her best efforts have come when she has been reserved for a final sprint and if those tactico can be employed by her trainer-driver, lan Cameron, she should come out on top as she is a dour finisher.

Smarty Pants has returned to top form in style in recent weeks, her latest run resulting in a resounding victory at Addington Raceway on January 28. She had little in her favour in that event and there was much to enthuse over about her success. If she races with the same dash she will

make Saucy Star work hard to gain her seventh win.

Major Bromac has had a light career, but he has shown much ability. He finished fourth to Early Riser on this course on January 3 at his most recent appearance. He has drawn No. 4 on the front, which should enable him to get away smoothly.

Fredericton has shown useful form at times, even though his latest efforts have been only fair. He is up to this class, and along with Dreamy Guy and Phar Lord appeals most of the others.

The emphasis at this meeting is on age group racing and the Autogas Pace, for three-year-olds, will be the second leg of the double.

Many of these youngsters will be on trial for the major classics, which will be decided shortly. Keystone Surprise, away from racing since he beat all but Sir Alba in the Champion Stakes at Ashburton on Boxing Day, looks the one to beat, although Laser Lad, French Lord, Kotare Sterling, Viewfield Skipper and Borderline are all capable of adding interest to proceedings.
