‘Speak Japanese’ contest
Sir,—The dismay of JaneMarie Shaw’s Japanese friend on finding that her introduction to New Zealand was being handled mainly by Japanese nationals is shared by many other Japanese visitors. But, while the insistence of some tour operators on employing native Japanese as guides may to some extent be a matter of self interest, another major reason has been that New Zealanders have often proved incapable of doing the job properly. The two full-time courses in Japanese at Christchurch Polytechnic were designed and introduced specially to help meet this need. The high rate of representation and success of the polytechnic students in the S.I.P.A. “Speak Japanese” contest over the last three years is just one indicator of the courses’ effectiveness. With support and guidance from experienced people such as Mrs Shoko Macfarlane, I believe young New Zealanders will begin to take their share of the work of introducing their own country to Japanese visitors. — Yours, etc., C. R. HOCKLEY. February 4, 1986.
