Posture makes perfect

An interest in weightlifting combined with medical training started a lifelong interest in posture in Auckland general practitioner Dr Vic Barker. He has now written a book, “Posture Makes Perfect,” in which he shares his convictions about the ramifications of posture on our health and enjoyment of life.

“It is incredible that so little is understood about the framework of our bodies,” he says. “When it fails, and the miseries of arthritis and backache occur, evolution is blamed. Evolution has not failed. We are perfectly designed for two-legged posture.”

He believes that our chairborne society is not only ruining our circulation, but is also having disastrous effects on a variety of other conditions. In his book he details new concepts in maternity, obesity, appearance’ personality, eyesight, old age, childhood, industry and sport — all based on posture. He also includes chapters on relieving osteoarthritis and back pain, and suggests treatments for pos-ture-related conditions.
