FUTURES Holiday blurs market
Trading on the futures market yesterday produced no really clear indications. Mr Geoff McDonnell, futures manager of Mair Astley and Company, said that, with a public holiday today, some people appeared to be squaring their books and it was hard yesterday to get a firm line on the market. On the United States dollar futures market, 51 contracts were traded. The New Zealand dollar opened on a weak note, but ended more strongly. The wool contract picked up, particularly as some people thought that a generally weakening New Zealand dollar could lead to high prices and a possible shortage. PCP business was light yesterday, at 153 contracts. Mr McDonnell said this reflected a nervous and unsure money market.’ Details of yesterday’s trading:sUS CONTRACTS Mth Open H/L Last Vol Feb. 1.9100 9120/8920 8920 47 Mar. 1.9000 9000/9000 9000 4 Contracts traded: 51 Open positions as at February 4: Feb. 282, Mar. 9, Jun. 3, Sep. 2, Dec, nil; total 296 (up 22).
