Aust. cricketers win first final

NZPA-AAP Sydney Australia beat the world one-day cricket champion, India, by 11 runs in an actionpacked first World Series Cup final at the Sydney Cricket Ground last evening. The Australians, after being restricted to 170 for eight wickets in a rain-short-ened match, bowled, magnificently to run through the Indians for 159. The pace bowler, Simon Davis, and the spinners, Greg Matthews and Allan Border, each took three wickets on a pitch which took plenty of spin. The Indians started badly when they lost the openers, Ravi Shastri and Krish Srikkanth, after only 11 runs. They never fully recovered. Dilip Vengsarkar was the top Indian scorer with 45, while Sunil Gavaskar, batting with an injured finger, made 32 to be the only other batsman to score more than 20. David Boon was Australia’s best Scorer, with 50, and figured in a 69-run opening partnership with Geoff Marsh. The stand was the fifth of more than 50 by the pair in six innings at the ground this season. Shastri and a part-time medium pacer, Mohammed Azharuddin, were the most successful Indian bowlers with two wickets each. AUSTRALIA D. Boon c Malhotra b Shastri 50 G.
