A nurseryman, Ron Bell, and his gnome, farewell an 87-year-old steam boiler which is being given to the McLeans Island Steam Preservation Society. Built by Scott Brothers, in Christchurch, in 1899, the boiler was originally fitted to a Christchurch tram engine until it was sold to a nursery in Beckenham in 1929. There it was used to sterilise soil. Mr Bell bought the boiler in 1968 to heat glasshouses at his Addington nursery. Now he needs more space for his gnome-making business.
