Power pole blast investigated
A loud noise which awoke residents to the west of Christchurch about 10.40 p.m. on Monday was caused by explosives near the base of a concrete power pole in Hasketts Road. The cause of the blast was not known until about 5 p.m. on Tuesday, when a passer-by saw the damaged pole and reported it to the police. The pole was replaced by workmen of the Central Canterbury Electric Power Board on Tuesday evening. A police spokesman said it was not known what explosive was used or why, but the incident was being investigated.
