Air N.Z. faces further action by staff
The Airline Stewards and Hostesses’ Union is believed to have given Air New Zealand 14 days notice of industrial action.
The reason is thought to be the union’s longstanding discontent about rostering. The union’s president, Mr Brian Pugh, would neither confirm nor deny that notice of industrial action had been lodged. Speaking to “The Press” from Auckland last evening, he said, “I would rather..‘not comment,: other than to say 'it is the union executive’s policy that if there is going to be any inconvenience to the travelling public, we will certainly give them plenty of notice.” He confirmed that the union still had problems over rostering. Air New Zealand’s public affairs manager, Mr
Bob Wallace, said the company knew of no strike notice by the stewards and hostesses. Any further difficulties at this stage would be a big blow to the airline, which is still wrestling with two separate disputes involving pilots and kitchen staff. Management and pilots are expected to meet tomorrow to discuss a wage row that grounded aircraft for several hours on Monday. ... The airline’s. kitchen . staff are in the “eleventh day of a strike which began when Air New Zealand suspended Auckland kitchen staff for working to rule in a campaign to get parity with ground stewards. That dispute has been referred to the Arbitration Court for a hearing on February 12. ■
