Kapil Dev player of series
NZPA-AAP Sydney The Indian cricket captain, Kapil Dev, has headed off the young Australian, Steve Waugh, for the player-of-the-series award in the 15 initial matches of the World Series Cup, it was announced yesterday. Dev picked up his winning points for the Benson and Hedges award in the last match of the series between India and New Zealand in Launceston.
He passed Australia’s Waugh, who was leading the points poll up to the Launceston game, to win the award of a gold tray and four gold goblets. Dev also shared the player-of-the-series award with his teammate, Kris Srikkanth, in the three-test series between India and Australia.
The prize then was also a gold tray and a set of gold goblets. A panel of cricket commentators allotted points for performances in each of the 15 lead-up matches of the World Series Cup on a three, two, one basis. Dev’s final points were 51 against Waugh’s 45 1 / 2 - New Zealand’s Richard Hadlee, who had already won the Benson and Hedges International Cricketer of the Year award of an Alfa 90 car, and Martin Crowe finished equal third on 36 points. Behind them leading a long list were David Boon (28), Bruce Reid Allan Border (17), Mohinder Amarnath (16), Geoff Marsh (15) and Chetan Sharma (15). The Australians won $41,500 in prizemoney and cricket awards in the 15-match series.
Seven player-of-the-match awards went to the Australians — Greg Matthews, Dave Gilbert, Waugh, Border, Marsh, Reid and Boon, including the double award for the Australia-N.Z. clash which was won by Gilbert. '
The Australians also picked up a bonus payment of $12,000 for making the finals. That award was available only to the Australians. The Indians received $24,500 from five wins and five losses.
Four Indian players took player-of-the-match awards including Dev, Mohammed Azharuddin, Dilip Vengsarkar and Chetan Sharma. The New Zealanders won $21,000 with three wins from nine matches including double prizemoney for the lost game against Australia after the abandoned match.
New Zealand won three player-of-the-match awards, Martin Crowe winning two and Richard Hadlee the other.
In the finals, the winner of the best of three matches will win $32,000 and the losing team $16,000.
If they win the series, the Australians will also collect a bonus payment of another $12,000. In the test series between Australia and New Zealand and Australia and India, prizemoney went to Australia with $34,000 India $20,000 and New Zealand $lB,OOO. Hadlee won two player - of - the - match awards in the tests and also a gold tray and four gold goblets as player-of-the-test series. A fellow New Zealander, John Bracewell, won the third player-of-the-match award in that series. In the Indian tests, Dev and Srikkanth each won a player award and shared the player-of-the-series award. The Australian captain, Allan Border, won the other player-of-the-match award.
