Michele Bromac to win DB heat

A second-line barrier draw might not stop Michele Bromac in the first South Island heat of the 1986 DB Export Fillies Pace at the Canterbury Park Trotting Club’s meeting at Addington Raceway tomorrow. This year marks the eighth running of the series and tomorrow’s heat, while it might not include a filly of the class of Armalight or Kurahaupo Eden, could be one of the strongest ever. All 10 selected to start have been winners, with Ollie’s Chance having earned a C 4 assessment. Of particular interest is Western Fella, from John Langdon’s Cambridge team. She comes into the race with an impressive last-start win at Cambridge last Thursday when she rated a splendid
2min 3.6 s for a mobile 2200 m. Western Fella has not finished further back than sixth in her last six starts. She is the only daughter of the boom sire, Smooth Fella, in the field and she is sure to give a good account of herself, even from the second line. However, she might find the rapid improver, Michele Bromac, more than a handful. The talented filly by Besta Fella in Colin de Filippi’s team, was most impressive when she won at Addington on January 22, rating 2min 3.2 s for a mobile 2000 m and achieving her victory with something in hand. Laudit, by Lordship from the speedy mare In or Out, has also compiled a sound record of two wins and a third from her four starts, the most recent being a third behind
Michele Bromac at Addington on January 22. Laudit looks capable of a merry mile. Another fast approaching her peak is Free’s Best, which will start from the No. 1 position. She showed remarkable speed when she tired a shade to sixth behind Early Riser at Addington on January 28. If she has trained on satisfactorily since then, she could well come out on top.
Ollie’s Chance and Gina Rosa will have their supporters, while a big run from Riani will not be a complete surprise. Riani, the winner of two last season, has not come up quite as well as expected in her three starts this term, but those races could have brought her close to her peak for her attempt in what is the final leg of the evening’s T.A.B. treble.
