Northern jumping team touring south

Northern show jumping selectors have named a fivestrong team of under-23 riders to tour the South Island from this week-end. The team will travel under the managership of Doug Isaacson, from Dannevirke, and will be captained by Roger Wilson, from Te Aroha. The six-horse squad will attend New Zealand Horse Society shows at Dunedin, Invercargill and Christchurch while in the south. Among the feature classes that it will compete in will be the three rounds of the 1986 International Tarmac, category A series, the Southland Stakes and three Bayer Rintal Grand Prix classes.

The team members are: Roger Wilson (Te Aroha) with Las Vegas, Geordie Bull (Atiamuri) with Gratis, Angella Illston (Taihape) with Mechanical, Keltha Grattan (Owhango) with Hondo and Zuiko, Robert Steele (Hawera) with Camouflage. • * •

The society trials season will start earlier this year, with a new feature, a novice horse circuit, starting on March 9.

Liaison between the Canterbury Area horse trials group and local pony clubs has produced a novice horse class at each of the Pony Club championship area trials.

The first novice trial will be held in association with the Hurunui Pony Club on March 9, the next with the North Canterbury Pony Club on March 23, and then with the Christchurch Pony Club on April 6.

The novice classes will be run under the society’s rules, so riders will have to be society members, and ensure that their horses are registered for trials. Registration forms can be obtained from Miss V. Caro, P.O. Box 8071, Palmerston North. Placings will gain points to

be accumulated, including the final trial of the novice circuit on April 25 at Gray’s property, Motukarara. It is hoped that riders will take the opportunity to gain

experience and points ~ towards up-grading to swell the intermediate grade, which has been lacking in numbers in recent years. A combined intermediate and advanced class will contest the Holmsley Cup on Anzac Day. This annual trophy has been held by a local rider, Jane Cullen, and her advanced graded bay thoroughbred gelding, Awatuna, for the last two years. Co-operation between the society and the pony club is most important where time, manpower and other resources are so valuable. Now horse trials may grow and improve with this added competition. » • * Award winners in horse events at the Peninsula A. and P.
