Trentham form should pay off at Riccarton today

By

J. J. BOYLE

January Trentham form is the form to respect when the competition gets weaker for February racing at Riccarton. A change to that welldefined pattern seems unlikely on the second day of the Canterbury Jockey Club’s meeting today. Noble Note and Satiny’s Pride, rival candidates for the Jim Beam Handicap, did enough at the Wellington Cup carnival to suggest they could quinella the second leg of today’s T.A.B. double. Earlier in the afternoon The Thief, a winner at her only appearance at Trentham last month, should safely account for the others in the Noah’s Handicap. Satiny’s Pride was a close second and Noble Note a battling third behind Harbor Flo over 1400 m on the second day

of the Trentham carnival. Noble Note put gloss on that form by running a somewhat unlucky second in the rich Jarden Mile five days later. Noble Note is top weight with 58kg and has to give Satiny’s Pride 6.5 kg in today’s sprint. The handy size of the field will ease the task of Noble Note, which has to be held up for a comparatively short run. But Satiny’s Pride’s rider, Chris Johnson, who is having a highly rewarding season, must have high hopes of improving an impressive strike rate in legs of T.A.B. doubles. Johnson’s hopeful for the Steinlager Handicap, first leg of today’s T.A.B. double, is Blyme.

There are others with stronger form credentials, but the “market” has a confused look about it

while there are doubts about a start for the Wingatui four-year-old, Bi Noble. Bi Noble was brought to Riccarton from Wingatui yesterday, but his trainer Hector T. Anderton, advised the Canterbury Jockey Club he would not decide about a start until he knew how Prince Majestic’s promising younger brother travelled. Bi Noble’s racing future will be as a member of Ray Verner’s Takanini team, and the high promise he has shown so far makes his departure from the South Island scene regrettable, if understandable. If Bi Noble does not go into today’s race, those at the head of the short list of fancies will probably be Royal Sceptre, Ten Winks, Blovinski, and All Trebles.
